Hi Jill, I was wondering if you had a bibliography of you books and sources you used for the making of the film? I'm a fourth year history student from Canada, and I'm writing a paper compairing Perchrons and Clysdales in Britain.

"The Percheron Horse" is a book published by Col Walters in 1886, He has a forward in it and then uses the text from the DuHays text (above). But more strikingly, it is an "art" book -it is very large and full of photographs of Percherons from the 1800s. The book is white with gold leaf -only 500 copies were printed. He includes the height of the horses in the photos too. The carriage photos in the montage are of Walters. Walters reclused in France during the civil war here and fell in love with the breed.
A History of the Percheron Horse (Sanders, 1917). Some good photos, good American history but there is a lot of "Revisionist history" of the Percheron breed compared to what was written about the breed in the 1800s. But one clue that I stumbled upon reading Sylvia Loch is that the word "barb" was often used interchangeably for "Iberian" during the 1800s. Anyway, some of what is written is biased to the huge work horse market of the teens.
I have tons of magazines, journals, booklets from the late 1800s to the 1960s. To make this montgage, I used the tiniest fraction of my collection.

ReplyDeleteI am trying to find photos of Edward Harris ll stud Diligence. I am on the board of Friends of Percheron Park and the historical society in Moorestown, NJ. We are building a long overdue park on Main Street to honor Harris and we have commissioned a life sized bronze of Diligence. We have a woodcut and have seen the portrait by Henri Delattre.
Unfortunately when Harris' son moved to Montgomery, Alabama he took all of his father's records there eventually giving everything to their historical Society. I am trying to track down photos for our sculptor to use and there is even a legend that Diligence's hide was preserved when he passed but we have no evidence of that.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
